How to Add Intercom Live Chat to Your Online Store
Add Intercom live chat to your online store. Sign up, find your workspace ID, paste it into Rovela. Your chat widget is live in 5 minutes.
Intercom is the chat widget you've seen on thousands of SaaS and ecommerce sites. It turns "where's my order?" questions into instant answers — and converts hesitant browsers into customers. This guide walks through Intercom-side setup: sign up, enable the Web Messenger, find your workspace ID, then paste it into Rovela.
What Intercom does for your store
Intercom puts a live chat bubble on every page of your store. Visitors with a question — sizing, shipping, returns, "is this in stock in red?" — get an answer in seconds instead of leaving. Average response time on Intercom is under a minute, and the conversion lift on ecommerce is well-documented.
If you can't staff chat 24/7, Intercom's AI-powered Fin bot handles the easy 60–80% of questions automatically using your help docs. You step in for the rest.
Before you start
- 5 minutes
- An email to sign up for the Intercom 14-day free trial
- A live Rovela store
Step 1: Sign up for Intercom
Go to intercom.com and click Start free trial. Enter your business name and an email. The 14-day trial includes the Messenger plan; pick a paid plan after the trial — Essential starts around $39/month and includes the chat widget plus core inbox features.
Step 2: Enable the Web Messenger
From your Intercom dashboard, click Settings (lower-left gear), then Channels → Messenger. Confirm Enable Messenger for Web is toggled on (you should see a green check). Without this, no chat widget appears even after install.
Step 3: Find your workspace ID
The fastest way: look at your browser URL while logged in. It looks like app.intercom.com/a/apps/WORKSPACE_ID/home. The 6–12 character lowercase string after /apps/ is your workspace ID. Copy it.
Intercom calls this the same thing as your "App ID" — both names refer to the exact same value.
Step 4: Pick your hosting region
Intercom hosts customer data in three regions:
- US — default for most accounts
- EU — required if you need European data residency for GDPR
- Australia — for AU-based businesses
If you signed up recently and didn't pick a region, you're on US. To check, go to Settings → Workspace — your region is shown on that page. Picking the wrong region causes Intercom to silently fail.
Step 5: Paste it into Rovela
Open the Rovela Features Store. Go to Quick actions → Connect Intercom. Paste your workspace ID. Pick your region from the dropdown. Click Connect Intercom.
Step 6: How to tell it's working
Refresh your storefront. Within 5 seconds, the Intercom Messenger icon appears in the bottom-right corner. Click it to open a test conversation, type a message, and check Intercom's Inbox → All — your test message should be there within seconds.
If a customer is signed in to your store, their conversation in Intercom is tagged with their email and customer ID automatically. When they sign out, Rovela cleanly shuts down their session so the next visitor on a shared computer doesn't see their chat history.
Common questions
- Will visitors see chat history from previous customers? No. Rovela handles session shutdown on customer logout — every session is isolated. This is the #1 setup bug in DIY Intercom installs and Rovela handles it for you.
- Does it work for anonymous visitors? Yes — anyone can chat without signing in. When a customer does sign in, their identity attaches automatically.
- What if I already have the WhatsApp button installed? Two floating buttons stack on bottom-right and look messy. Pick one — for stores selling globally, Intercom is usually the better default. You can remove WhatsApp from Rovela's panel.
- Is it GDPR compliant? Yes. Rovela gates Intercom behind your store's marketing cookie consent, so EU visitors who decline see no Messenger.
Connect Intercom in one click with Rovela
Rovela handles the technical details that trip up most Intercom installs: the boot snippet with cookie consent, customer identification on signin, region-correct API base, and the critical session shutdown on logout. Start with Rovela or pair Intercom with Klaviyo for the email side of the customer journey and Trustpilot for review-driven trust signals. Need help? Contact us.
