How to Connect Klaviyo to Your Online Store

Connect Klaviyo to your online store in under a minute. Sign up, find your Public API key, paste it into Rovela — automated emails ship the same day.

Klaviyo is the email and SMS marketing platform behind tens of thousands of DTC stores. Browse abandonment, post-purchase, win-back — the flows that drive repeat revenue all live there. Setting it up used to mean a developer install. Now you paste a 6-character key into Rovela and it's live in under a minute. This guide walks through the Klaviyo side of that setup so you know exactly what to copy.

What Klaviyo does for your store

Klaviyo turns customer behavior into automated email and SMS flows. A shopper views a product and leaves — Klaviyo emails them four hours later with a "still thinking about it?" reminder. They buy — Klaviyo sends a thank-you, then a review request a week later, then a "we miss you" message after 60 days. For most DTC stores using it well, Klaviyo drives 30–50% of total email revenue.

Free up to 250 contacts and 500 emails a month. Paid plans start around $20/month once you grow past that. You can run the entire setup on the free tier.

Before you start

  • 5 minutes
  • An email address to sign up with Klaviyo
  • A live Rovela store

Step 1: Sign up for Klaviyo

Go to klaviyo.com and click Sign up. Pick your country, business type, currency, and timezone. The free tier is fine — you can upgrade later if your list grows.

Step 2: Set up your customer list (recommended)

Klaviyo needs at least one list to send to. From the left navigation, go to Lists & Segments → Create list / segment → List. Name it "Newsletter Subscribers" or "All Customers". This becomes the destination for newsletter signups and post-purchase contacts.

Optional but powerful: also browse Flows → Browse Flow Library and activate the Welcome Series template. This sends a 3-email sequence to anyone who joins your list. You can edit the copy later — it works out of the box.

Step 3: Find your Public API key

Click your account name in the lower-left corner, then Settings. In the settings page, click the API keys tab. The Public API key is at the top — a 6-character alphanumeric value (Klaviyo also calls it your "Site ID"). Copy it.

Only owners or admins can access this tab. If you don't see API keys, ask whoever set up the Klaviyo account to make you an admin or to copy the key for you. The Public API key is safe to share — it can't be used to read or change customer data.

Step 4: Paste it into Rovela

Open your Rovela store. Click Rovela Features Store at the top of the chat panel. Open the Marketing category. Pick Connect Klaviyo. Paste your 6-character key into the field and click Connect Klaviyo. That's it — Rovela handles the script, customer identification on signin, and every ecommerce event behind the scenes.

Step 5: How to tell it's working

Open Klaviyo and go to Analytics → Metrics. Within an hour of installing, the Active on Site metric starts populating with visits.

One quirk to expect: Klaviyo only tracks "known browsers" — people who have either clicked a Klaviyo email, submitted a form on your site, or signed in. Brand-new anonymous visitors don't show up until they identify themselves through one of those actions. As your list grows and you send more emails, more visitors get tracked. Day one your activity feed will look quiet. Week three it'll be busy.

Common questions

  • Do I need a paid plan to start? No. Free tier covers up to 250 contacts and 500 emails/month — enough to launch and validate.
  • Why can't I see anonymous visitors browsing? Klaviyo by design only tracks identified browsers. This is a privacy feature, not a bug.
  • Can I send SMS from Klaviyo? Yes — Klaviyo handles email and SMS in one platform. Same Public API key, same dashboard.
  • What about EU privacy compliance? Rovela gates Klaviyo behind your store's analytics cookie consent. EU visitors who decline are never tracked.

Connect Klaviyo in one click with Rovela

Rovela handles everything technical: script loading, customer identification on signin, the four ecommerce events that power Klaviyo's best flows (Viewed Product, Added to Cart, Started Checkout, Placed Order), and EU privacy compliance. You paste a 6-character key — that's the entire merchant lift. Start with Rovela or pair Klaviyo with Intercom live chat and Google Analytics for a full customer-journey stack. Questions?
